Student Life

Middle Division Clubs, Fall 2019

Middle Division Clubs at The School are designed to give students in Grades 6-8 enrichment and leadership opportunities, as well as new ways to collaborate across grades. Two out of every three Middle Division students participate in at least one club, and many participate in several. In addition, The School hosts clubs for younger grades, including Chess Team.

Throughout the year, many of these clubs and teams attend events throughout the tri-state area, where they present their work to peers from other schools and often receive accolades.

  • Debate Team

    Wednesdays, 3:30-5:30 pm, Room 320
Faculty Advisors: Albert deGrasse and Tiffany Amin Javaheri
    Coach: Columbia University Debate Team
Members of the TSC Debate Team explore a variety of topics and generate arguments through multiple perspectives. Debating promotes critical thinking skills while improving the ability to persuade, communicate effectively, and speak with clarity and precision. When advocating ideas that challenge their own beliefs, team members exercise their empathy by learning about others through research and conversation in a communal space. The skills honed in debate can be used in everyday lives.
  • Gender Sexuality Spectrum (GSS)

    Wednesdays, 3:30-5:30 pm, Room 322
Faculty Advisors: Zeno Peterson, Spiro Tzakis, Jessica Freedman
The GSS is a group of dedicated Middle Division students united in celebrating The School as a safe, inclusive place. The School’s GSS continues to plan fun and meaningful events that promote the message that it’s okay to be who you are. The GSS is proud to support and celebrate the LGBTQIPA+ community, as well as raise awareness in the TSC community.
  • Maker Club

    Mondays, 3:30-5:30 pm, Room 333
Faculty Advisors: Dylan Ryder, Joshua Burker
The MakerClub seeks new ways to design and engineer through the use of computing and hands-on technical skills. Students design a project of their choice: coding, DIY electronics, 3D printing, handmade fashions, carpentry, digital audio/video creation, or whatever! This club gives students the tools, the time, and the help to make it real. Each MakerClub meeting begins with a brief demo lesson from the club advisor in a new tool or technology, so students can grow as engineers. The remaining majority of club time is for students to work on independent projects of their choice.

  • Visual Arts Portfolio Club

    Fridays, 3:30-5:30 pm, Art Studio
    Faculty Advisor: Royce Howes
The Visual Arts Portfolio Club provides art education and related opportunities for dedicated Middle Division students, supporting their growth as artists, learners, and citizens. Participants engage in visual art projects, and discussions, and have the opportunity to assemble a visual art portfolio that may be used in the high school application process. The Visual Art Club is not only for those applying to arts high schools; it is a valuable opportunity for students to explore their own expression and creativity in visual art forms and to develop skills and understanding in the visual arts.
