Application Process for Community Families
Community families living in Districts 3 and 5 must enter a lottery for applications for the 2008-2009 School Year. Lottery forms are available on September 1 on our website, in The School’s lobby, and at a number of preschools and daycare centers throughout the two districts.
To be eligible for our lottery, families must live in District 3 or 5, and must submit a completed lottery form to our Admissions Office by 9:00 PM on November 1.
PLEASE NOTE: OUR DEADLINE FOR LOTTERY ENTRIES WAS THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 1, 2007. WE ARE NO LONGER ACCEPTING ENTRIES INTO OUR 2008-2009 LOTTERY.
Our lottery drawing will take place at 12:00 PM on Tuesday, November 6. We will communicate the results of the lottery by mail on Monday, November 12 to all families who submitted a Lottery Entry Form. Families of students drawn from the lottery will be mailed applications for admission, and will be invited to attend an Open House at The School, where they will have an opportunity to talk with teachers and administrators and see classes in session. Because we draw more students from our lottery than we have spaces, being mailed an application does not guarantee admission to The School. Families of students whose applications are completed by our December 15 deadline will be asked to set up an interview and a visit to The School with their child in January. During the school visit, students will meet with classroom teachers for a skills screening.
In addition to filling out the application and attending their scheduled school visit and interview, to complete the application process, families must provide The School with proof of residence, a copy of their child’s birth certificate, records from his/her current school, two teacher recommendations (one for applicants to kindergarten), and all necessary financial aid information. To be considered for admission, families must complete the entire application process by February 1.
On February 15, in keeping with the timetable followed by New York City independent schools, we will mail out acceptances for as many students as we anticipate openings at each grade level. As long as our in-house screening indicates that we will be able to serve a child, students who have fully completed the application process by our deadline will be offered acceptance according to their lottery number, keeping in mind the balance between Columbia and Community families, and boys and girls. Students further down in the lottery will be placed on our waitlist, and will be offered admission should openings become available. Because waitlists are not rolled over from one year to the next, families that are interested in applying for admission for the following school year will need to enter the lottery once again.
